9062 Pte Arthur Harpham of the 2nd Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, was killed in action on the 30th August 1914. Arthur was a Nottinghamshire man who was born at Selston in Notts and enlisted at Nottingham. His army service number suggests that he originally joined up in 1906 or 1907.
Arthur arrived in France with his battalion on 10th August 1914 and according to his medal index card was presumed dead on the 26th August. This was subsequently revised to the 30th and it is this date which appears on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database.
Arthur Harpham has no known grave and like Stuart Laverty, who I remembered on the 24th August, is commemorated by name on the La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial on the Aisne.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

Remembrance Day- 13th November 2016
11th November 2016
I was at the cenotaph on Friday to pay my respects to those who went before. My interest in military history began withe the First World War and so as I stood with my head bowed I silently recounted the names of those men whom I wished to thank and remember. It begins with my family:
Walter Nixon
Jack Nixon
Sid Nixon
Edgar Nixon
Alf Nixon
Bert Elam
Charles Arthur Roberts
I then recalled the men I had interviewed, mostly between 1980 and 1985 when I was a young man at school and later at university, and the men I was interviewing were in their eighties, nineties and, in a couple of cases, hundreds. I remembered pleasant times with:
Frederick Cutts
Reg Crane
These were all men who I met on multiple occasions and, dare I say, became friends with, although to me they were always Mr Bardsley, Mr Brown, Mr Cutts; never Harry, Stan or Fred.
I am honoured to have had ancestors who fought for Britain in the First World War, honoured too to have met and chatted with men - well over a hundred of them in the end - who shouldered arms for King and Country during those terrible years 1914-1918. Today, on this Remembrance Sunday, I remember them all.

St Andrew's Church, Colne Engaine
A war memorial at Colne Engaine, Essex; built in 2014 thanks to the generosity of local donors, has seen more names added to the village's roll-call of men who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars.
Inside the St Andrew's church, a memorial lists the names of 18 men who fell during in the First World War, with two casualties from the Second World War added later.
The more recent memorial provides more detail on the men, including the year in which they died, and I list the names below, in the order in which they appear on the memorial. Names in bold are those names missing from the church memorial.
First World War 1914-1918
Bertram W Dixey 1917
Percy Edgar Dixey 1917
George A Boreham 1918
Stanley Butcher 1915
Sidney Carter 1916
Charles Catterwell 1917
Stanley M Coppin 1816
Scott Fairbank 1915
George Fordham 1917
Alfred James Gardner 1918
David Basil Hart 1918
Douglas Charles Hibble 1917
George Hicks 1918
Raymond George Lane 1918
George Quartermain 1917
George Charles Reynolds 1916
Bert Ridgwell 1916
Harry George Smith 1917
Tom Smith 1915
Ernest Wakeling 1915
Percy G Wakeling 1915
Frederick Willsher 1918
Frank James Wright 1917
Second World War 1939-1945
John Louis Colclough Watson 1941
Edward Cotterill Scholefield 1941
Rupert Mortimer Legge 1944
Ronald Wilfred Symonds 1944
I am sure that a lot of thought went into the new memorial but I am at a loss to understand why Bertram and Percy Dixey appear at the top of the roll call. Bertram is buried in the churchyard and Percy, presumably related, was from the nearby village of Pebmarsh. I wonder also, why the men's ranks or regiments or regimental numbers were not included on the new roll. Maybe it came down to cost in the end. Nevertheless, it's good to see that 100 years after the outbreak of the Great War, there was still sufficient drive and determination to get this project off the ground and realise it in such a well-crafted manner. I took a number of photographs on a late autumn afternoon and will be happy to send these on to anyone with an interest in this community. Drop me a line via the research tab.

Remembering 6th March 1915
I am certain that none of the individuals listed below could ever have believed that they would be destined to be forever united with each other. And yet they all share the unhappy distinction of losing their lives on the 6th March 1915, one hundred and one years ago today.
There is certainly a mixture of service and nationalities represented here: men of the regular army, men of the special reserve, Kitchener recruits, men from the Dominions. Of particular interest to me is Gefreiter Gustav Nowak of the German Army who is buried in the Ukamas cemetery in Namibia; an enemy of the allies but buried by and remembered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Also dying on this day, Nursing Sister Louisa Jordan of the Scottish Women's Hospital who is buried in the Chela Kula Military Cemetery in Nis, Serbia (above).
By First World War standards, 6th March 1915 was a quiet day for the allies. Nevertheless, 128 men and one woman gave their lives this day and are remembered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission from where the following list is taken.

Broken hearts for two Ox and Bucks men
For no other reason than I've just finished some research for a client whose ancestor served with the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry during the First World War, I thought I would remember today, those men from the regiment who lost their lives on Valentine's Day.
There are no recorded deaths for 1915 and just one for 14th February 1916: 17040 Pte Percy Slatford, 6th Battalion. Percy was 33 years old and is commemorated on the Menin Gate at Ypres (above, courtesy CWGC). He was the husband of Winifred Emily Slatford (nee Earls) whom he had married in Oxford in 1904. She would later re-marry James Stubbs in Woodstock, Oxfordshire in 1919.
When the 1911 census was taken, Percy and Winifred were living at 32 Lake Street, New Hinksey, Oxfordshire. Percy was working as a farm labourer and they had four children: Alice Vera Slatford (aged 5), George Slatford (aged 4), Gertrude May Slatford (aged 3) and Violet Edith Slatford (aged 5 months). GRO records reveal that a second son, Leslie V Slatford, was born in 1913. None of these children would see their father again after he left for France on the 22nd July 1915.
The following year, on 14th February 1917, 28396 Pte John Robert Ing of the 3rd Garrison Battalion, Ox and Bucks Light Infantry, died at Milton Hospital, Portsmouth and was buried in his native Long Crendon (St Mary) Churchyard. He was 34 years old, the son of the late Michael Ing, and Fanny Ing and the husband of Dorothy Ing (nee Warner). The couple had married in 1916, their marriage registered in the final quarter of that year. They had therefore only been married for a matter of months when John Ing died. I believe that Dorothy later re-married in 1923. There is a birth registered for a John M Ing in the third quarter of 1917, mother's maiden name, Warner and it would seem possible that this was the child that John Robert Ing never lived to see. Note however, that a Dorothy V Ing, with the same mother's maiden name, was born in 1920.
No Ox and Bucks men lost their lives on Valentine's Day 1918.
