Remembering the 2nd Buffs at 2nd Ypres - 3rd May 1915

According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission 629 British Army officers and men lost their lives on the 3rd May 1915, one hundred years ago today.

The 2nd Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) lost particularly heavily on this day with 143 men paying the ultimate sacrifice. Of these 141 men, only six have known graves, the remaining 135 men all commemorated by name on the Menin Gate.

The 2nd Buffs who died that day are all listed below and their regimental numbers show a range of experience - or inexperience.  The L/ prefix men are all regular soldiers, career soldiers like the first L/ man on this list, George Allen who had arrived in France on the 7th October 1914.

George's number reveals that he had joined The Buffs in August 1903. This was at the time when regular terms of enlistment into the infantry were for three years with the colours and nine on the reserve. In all probability then, George had been transferred to the Army Reserve in August 1906 (or perhaps August 1907 had he been serving abroad). Men joining at the same time as George did had seen the usual service at the regimental depot and then with the home battalion before shipping out to South Africa in 1905. Getting back into khaki and army routine seven or eight years after they had last shouldered a rifle would have been a challenge for a lot of men.

The vast majority of the men killed on 3rd May 1915 were career soldiers. The newest recruit was 21 year old Charles Williams who had enlisted for seven and five after Britain went to war in August 1914, while Privates William Ward Sunderland and Charles James Burns had originally joined the regiment in 1894. Both had seen service in India and both held the India General Service Medal with a clasp for the Punjab Frontier 1897-1898.

The men with an S/ prefix are men of the Special Reserve and there are two number series in play here. The low two digit and three digit S/ numbers are men who joined the Special Reserve for wartime service only. Their numbers are often presented on attestation papers as SR/EK/GS or Special Reserve / East Kent / General Service. The men with four and five digit S/ numbers have service ranging from 1908 to August 1914.

G/ prefix men are Kitchener volunteers, men who answered the call for King and Country. There are 37 of these men whose regimental numbers indicate that they enlisted between August 1914 and March 1915. The CWGC notes that Thomas Twyman's number is G/14651. This can't possibly be correct as the number would not be issued until much later in the war. His number was G/4651.

Remembering 2nd Ypres - 23rd April 1915

On 22nd April 1915 the German IV Army launched a surprise attack on Allied Lines, an attack that saw the use of poison gas for the first time. The men listed below - 485 of them in total - all lost their lives the following day, 23rd April 1915. All of these men died in Belgium and the vast majority of these in or around the Ypres Salient in what came to be known as the Second Battle of Ypres.

One hundred years on, I remember the men who gave their lives that day. Casualties are ordered alphabetically by cemetery.  Note that a number of aliases are present in the following roll call. In each case the assumed name is the name given first; thus John Smith ALIAS Jones implies that the man's real name was John Jones but that he enlisted as John Smith.

2nd East Surrey Regiment - 14th February 1915

One hundred years ago today, on Sunday the 14th February 1915, 44 men from the East Surrey Regiment laid down their lives for King and Country. They are listed below, courtesy of The Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

With the exception of 6934 Colour Sergeant Andrew McGee (Depot) who died in England and AR/7204 Sergeant Frederick Farmer (1st Battalion) who died of wounds in Boulogne, all of the men were serving with the 2nd Battalion and only five have known graves, their companions all being remembered on the Menin Gate at Ypres.

The men were killed in an assault to re-capture a lost trench on the south side of the Ypres-Combines canal. 300 men took part in the attack which was launched at 2.30pm but by 4.30pm it was clear that the men had suffered heavy losses and were unable to advance further. Support was called for by the 2nd Buffs (East Kent Regiment) who found the remaining men of the East Surreys about 800 yards from the trench.

By 7pm the Buffs had reached to within about 500 yards of the trench but by now it was dark and, according to the 2nd East Surrey's war diary, "No one could tell us the position of the trench or the nature of the ground over which we had to proceed, and as it seemed possible that we should advance against the main German position and not the one trench intended, the OC decided to postpone the attack until some reconnaissance could be made and some guides could be obtained."

By the time the remains of the battalion reported back to headquarters it was 11.30pm and they had been floundering in mud and filth for nine hours. Little wonder then that the majority of those who died were subsequently lost in the mud or their bodies blown to pieces by shellfire.

5875 Pte Josiah Hall, 1st Bn, Lincolnshire Regiment

According to Soldiers Died in The Great War, 746 British Army officers and men lost their lives on this day, 1st November, in 1914. The 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment suffered particularly heavy losses on this day, taking part in a counter-attack on Wystschaete and coming under "murderous fire". The battalion war diary records that seven officers and 293 other ranks were killed, wounded or reported missing.

5875 Pte Josiah Hall was one of the men killed. He was born in Eastville, Boston in 1882 and was living in Pudsey, Leeds when he enlisted (although his place of enlistment is recorded as Louth). His regimental number dates to 1901 which suggests that he was probably a Section D Reservist when Britain went to war in August 1914. His medal index card indicates that he did not sail with the Battalion in August but arrived in France on the 13th September.

Both Soldiers Died in the Great War and The Commonwealth War Graves Commission record this man as Joshua Hall. However, his medal index card, birth index entry and census returns record his name as Josiah Hall. He appears on the 1891 census as an eight-year-old living with his parents and three siblings at 17 Priory Road, Louth (pictured above). His father was George Hall, a 41 year old labourer, married to Eliza Hall (aged 47). Josiah was the eldest of four children, followed by Sarah (aged seven), Harry (aged five), and Arthur (aged three).  On the 1911 census he is probably the same Josiah Hall (aged 27) recorded with the 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment in Aden. He has the trade of "carpenter" entered against his name.

Josiah has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial in Ypres.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

10110 L/Cpl William Charles Axon,1st Royal Scots Fusiliers

Remembering today, 10110 L/Cpl William Charles Axon of the 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers who was killed in action 100 years ago on the 27th October 1914.

William Axon was born at Umballa, India on the 6th April 1889 and baptised in Dagshai on the 5th May that year. His father, John Samuel Axon, was a colour sergeant with the 21st Regiment of Foot (later Royal Scots Fusiliers) and was stationed in India at the time of his son's birth.

William's regimental number dates to around the 5th October 1909 (when he would have been twenty years old), and his medal index card indicates that he arrived overseas on the 14th August 1914. A brief entry in De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour notes that he was killed in action "near Ypres" whilst the war diary notes that between the 27th and 31st October, three men were killed and four wounded, "chiefly from snipers". The Commonwealth War Graves Commission website notes that William was serving with B Company and that he was the son of John and Eliza Axon of 74 Slateford Road, Edinburgh. He is buried in the Royal Irish Rifles Graveyard at Laventie, his body having been re-buried there after it was removed from another location: map reference 36 - M23 - D3.3. His parents paid for the inscription, THY WILL BE DONE to be added to his headstone.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

8546 Pte Maurice E Hirons, 2nd Bn, Ox and Bucks LI

8546 Private Maurice Edward Hirons of the 2nd Battalion, Ox and Bucks Light Infantry, died of wounds on the 7th November 1914. He was one of 722 British Army officers and men to die on this date.

Maurice was born in Bicester and he enlisted in Oxford in late September or early October 1907. He was therefore possibly coming to the end of his seven years service with the colours when Britain went to war in August 1914. His medal index card indicates that he arrived in France on the 14th September 1914 whilst the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records that he has no known grave and is recorded on the Menin Gate at Ypres.

7606 Cpl Hugh McGuckian, 2nd Bn, Royal Scots

7606 Corporal Hugh McGuckian of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots, was killed in action on the 2nd June 1915. He was a career soldier, born in Wolsingham, County Durham, who had originally attested at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the 17th June 1901, and joined at Glencorse the following day. His terms of enlistment were three years with the colours and nine on the reserve. At the time of his enlistment he was 18 years and four months old and working as a miner. He was five feet, four inches tall with a fair complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He had a scar on the middle of his back, and tattoo marks on his left forearm.

Hugh McGuckian served in South Africa in 1902 and later in India. His surviving service record is quite extensive and I attach one page of it, above.

Hugh's stations look like this:

Home: 17th June 1901 to 16th July 1902
South Africa: 17th July 1902 to 13th March 1903
Home: 14th March 1903 to 19th September 1904
India: 20th September 1904 to 8th March 1909
Home: 9th March 1909 to 9th August 1914
BEF France: 10th August 1914 to 2nd June 1915.

At the time of his death, Hugh was a married man with three children, two from his marriage to Mabel Lavinia Chalmers Sloggie (married 23rd August 1912) and one, a daughter - Mary, born in 1910 - from a former marriage. His two boys, James and Harry, would have been one year old and two months old when he died.

Hugh McGuckian has no known grave and is one of over 54,000 men commemorated on the Menin Gate at Ypres. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission notes that he was 33 years old, the son of Hugh McGuckian of Dunston-on-Tyne, and the late Mary McGuckian, and the husband of Mabel L C McGuckian of 3 Brandfield Street, Edinburgh.

Hugh McGuckian's name does not appear on the Wolsingham memorial in County Durham, presumably because he had moved out of the area some time before his death.

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

2nd Lt John Lauderdale Stewart-Richardson, 2nd Bn, Coldstream Gds

Second Lieutenant John Lauderdale Stewart-Richardson of the 2nd Battalion, Coldstream Guards, died on the 17th May 1916. He is buried in the Potijze Burial Ground Cemetery at Ypres.

The Peerage website states:

"Lieutenant John Lauderdale Stewart-Richardson was born on 18 January 1878.1 He was the son of Sir James Thomas Stewart-Richardson of Pitfour, 14th Bt. and Harriett Georgina Alice Cochrane. He married Nora Joyce Rigby daughter of William Rigby on 6 May 1916. He died on 17 May 1916 at age 38, killed in action."

The Peerage states that he gained the rank of Lieutenant, although both Soldiers Died in The Great War and The Commonwealth War Graves Commission give his rank as Second Lieutenant.

The Cambridge Museum in New Zealand gives additional information:

"Sergeant 11/360 John Lauderdale Stewart Richardson Son of Sir James and Lady Harriet Stewart Richardson. Born 18 January 1879. Commission Agent. Enlisted 15 August 1914. Wellington Infantry. Killed in Action 17 May 1916." There is also a photo of a very young-looking J L Stewart-Richardson, and a photo of his headstone which is clearly Coldstream Guards, although the Cambridge Museum makes no mention of this.

The London Gazette notes that John Stewart-Richardson was commissioned as a second lieutenant (on probation) on the 6th November 1915 and his service record, which survives at the National Archives, would of course give the full picture.

L/12280 Pte Albert Wiggins, 3rd Bn, Middx Regt

L/12280 Private Albert Wiggins of the 3rd Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, was killed in action on the 15th February 1915. He was one of 216 British Army soldiers to die on this date and one of 63 Middlesex Regiment men.

Albert was born in Willesden and joined the army at Mill Hill on the 7th September 1908. He was 20 years and one month old and was working as a carman. His surviving attestation papers show that he initially joined the Royal Irish Regiment and then transferred to The Middlesex Regiment on the 23rd September. Albert was five feet, four inches tall, had a fresh complexion, brown eyes and light brown hair.

Initially attached to the 6th (Extra Reserve) Battalion, Albert was posted to the 4th Battalion on the 28th September 1908 and then to the 3rd Battalion on the 1st October 1909. The same day he sailed for Singapore and would remain there until December 1910 when he moved west into India. He left for India on the 19th December 1910 and would remain there until the 18th November 1914 when he sailed for the UK. He was in England for a few months until he sailed again, this time for France, arriving there on the 18th January 1915.

Albert's papers record his next of kin as his parents: Henry and Lydia Wiggins of 5 Junction Terrace, Harlesden. It is also noted that he had three older brothers: Ernest, Charles and William; and two younger brothers: John and Henry.

A note on Albert's file states that he was killed in action between the 12th and 15th February 1915, but that his presumed date of death was the 15th. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate at Ypres.

6170 Pte William Rennie, 2nd Bn, KOSB

6170 Private William Rennie of the 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers, was killed in action on the 20th December 1914. William, serving with H Company, was 26 years old at the time of his death. He was born in Annan, Dumfrieshire and enlisted at Dumfries.

William's number dates to around August 1908 and belongs to the series issued to men joining the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion of the KOSB. He almost certainly transferred to the 2nd Battalion in the autumn of 1914 and, retaining his 3rd Battalion number, arrived in France on the 26th October that year.

William was the son of William and Agnes Rennie, of Fish Green Lodge, Auchencairn, Castle Douglas. He has no known grave, and like so many others who fell in the Ypres salient, is commemorated on the Menin Gate.

4907 Rfm George Denham Massy, 18th Bn, London Regiment

4907 Rifleman George Denham Massy of the 18th Battalion, The London Regiment (London Irish Rifles) was killed in action on the 15th December 1916. George had originally joined the 6th London Regiment back in 1908, and before that - in all probability - was serving with the 2nd London Volunteer Rifle Corps. His number with the 6th Londons - 205 - indicates that he was one of the initial intake into that battalion, almost certainly joining within the first two weeks of April 1908.

Soldiers Died in The Great War records that George was living at Fulham and enlisted at Ealing. There is no place of birth recorded and I have been unable to find him on English census returns. Given his surname and the fact that he would later join the London Irish Rifles, it seems a possibility that he was born in Ireland and later moved to England, probably for work.

George's 18th Londons number dates to late March or early April 19156 and it would appear that shortly after Britain went to war with Germany in 1914, George was posted to a second or third line battalion of the 6th Londons before being transferred later on to the 18th Londons. He probably went overseas shortly after that transfer - probably within a matter of days - and he lost his life in the great WW1 killing zones around Ypres. He is one of 2033 men buried in the Railway Dug-outs Burial Ground close to that town.

3/7710 Pte Alfred Samuel Hordle, 1st Bn, Dorsetshire Regt

I was travelling yesterday and therefore had no opportunity to update this blog.

3/7710 Private Alfred Samuel Hordle of the 1st Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment, was killed in action on the 25th November 1914. His number indicates that he joined the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battlion of the Dorsetshire Regiment and this is confirmed by his partial service record which survives in the WO 363 series at the National Archives.

Alfred joined the 3rd Battalion on the 21st August 1914. He was 36 years old, was a serving member of the National Reserve and already had prior service with the 3rd Battalion. He was a married man and was living in Poole, Dorset. Alfred was five feet five inches tall, had a fresh complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair.

Alfred's wife is recorded as Ellen Isabella Hordle although by the time Alfred's British War and Victory medals were sent to her in 1921, she had re-married and her surname was Foot. This information is also included on Alfred's entry in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's register. Ellen had previously received his 1914 Star (in 1919 when she was still Ellen Hordle) and also, in April 1915, Princess Mary's gift to the troops. Read about the history of the Princess Mary tin here.

Alfred was posted to the 1st Battalion on the 23rd October 1914 sailed for France the same day. He was killed just over a month later. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate at Ypres.

When Ellen Hordle lost her husband she also lost her income and Alfred's surviving papers bear testimony to the obvious hardships that she suffered. There is a note in his files dated June 1915 which states that she was in distressed circumstances, and a later appeal, undated and subsequently fire-damaged which gives a little more detail. It states that Ellen (aged 39) was receiving a pension of ten shillings a week, that she was crippled and also extremely deaf and therefore unable to earn a living for herself. The recommendation, signed by the recruiting officer at Poole, was that she should be receiving a pension of at least one pound per week and that her lameness was likely to get worse rather than better. There is no record on file as to whether Ellen Hordle's appeal was successful.
